Off-Track Adventures

Jane and Seth were out of school for 3 weeks during September so we decided to make a list of things we wanted to do.  This was an extension to our short summer break.  We got a lot accomplished despite me having several days where I wasn't feeling well  (migraine) and had to change plans.

The weather started to get cool.  This trip to the park left me wishing that I had my sweatshirt with me!  That cool streak didn't last long, but I enjoyed it while it was there!

Seth picked a friend and we went to the aquarium.

Seth wanted to stay in a cabin, so I found a cool little cabin at a place called River's Edge in Heber.  It is on the south side of the Jordanelle Dam.  It felt weird at first to plan this little vacation for just the three of us.  Mark and Paul were in school, so I had to just do it with those who could come.  We thought about having Daniel come with us, but didn't feel like we should leave Mark and Paul home alone for 2 days (they'd never go to sleep because of being on the computer!) It was good to get away with just the two little ones.  We were able to to things that excited them but would have bored the teenagers!
We went kayaking the first day.  We were going to do this last, on our way out, but the weather forecast showed rain, so we switched things around and it's a good thing we did!

Our cabin had a lovely view of the Timpanogos canal.  It also had two bedrooms.  The kids drew lots as to who got the top bunk for the first night (Jane won). I imagined staying up in my king-size bed all by myself reading and relaxing once the kids were in bed, but somehow I wound up sharing this bed both nights!  Seth stayed with me the first night and then both of them the second night.

The first night we lit a fire and made smores.  The campground we were staying at was practically empty so it was nice to have the solitude that isn't available on the weekends here.

We went to the Heber Valley Railroad the second day.  They had a pretend gun fight and aside from it being loud, we enjoyed it!

The kids were excited to ride on a real train!  We had a great little ride on the Heber Creeper.  We had kettle popcorn and candy sticks to eat while we viewed the world from the train. The sun went down as we arrived back at the station and I had two tired kids!

We had a lot of rain while we were at the cabin (it had a metal roof and I loved listening to the rain fall!) We popped some popcorn and watched a movie when some of our plans were rained out.  We played games, put together a puzzle, and got a little bit silly at times.  When there was a lull in the rain we fed the fish in the pond, played horseshoes, walked along the canal, and played on the playground.  We were able to do everything we had on our list except go for a hike.  It was just too wet.

We took this picture as we were getting ready to leave.  The camera was sitting on the picnic table on the back side of the cabin. This was our backyard for our stay. I could see this from the bedroom and deck.  It was a beautiful view!  This trip really helped me unwind and find my center again.

After our trip we did a bunch of activities to fill the time before school started.  We went to Gardner Village for a witch hunt.  It was the last week of September and the temperature was in the low 90's. It was so hot and such a contrast to that cool weather we had the two weeks before.

The night before school started back again, my brother Dan and his girlfriend Taylor invited us over to their new house for a barbecue.  The weather was perfect and the company was fun.  Jane didn't want to leave! I didn't get a picture of Dan and Taylor together, so this picture of my brothers Dan and Randy will have to suffice!

Phew!  School is back in session and I'm making plans for our next break.  We will have all of December off.  Good times!

39th Birthday

This year I turned 39 years old.  I decided that I needed to make some plans to do something to celebrate, so I made reservations for our family to hike to Timpanogos Cave.  We have been wanting to do it for several years and just never made it a priority so it never happened.  Jane earned a new water backpack for being a tough girl on the last hike, so she was excited to use it.  It is the cutest little thing!  She did great on the hike.  It is 1 1/2 miles up to the cave.  Daniel carried her at intervals, but she did great on her own.

The youngest and the oldest participants needed to stop and rest more often than the boys!

Seth wanted to learn how to make a cake, so Daniel had him make my birthday cake!  He did a great job and it was delicious!

Daniel gave me a gift that I love!  I got the Amazon Echo.  I didn't even know that it existed, but we have really enjoyed it.  I'm not quite sure how to explain what it is, so just look it up if you want to find out what I'm talking about. We enjoy listening to the music through the speakers and asking it to tell us a joke.  I've been using it to compose my shopping list and it has proven itself to be quite handy!

I have just one year left in my 30's.  I've got a few things to cross off of my to-do list and I'm ready to make the most of this coming year!

First Day of School 2015

This year all four kids are in school. It is kind of weird.  Years ago I knew that this day would come, but I wasn't prepared for the change.  I actually cried when I dropped Jane off for her first day (I cried on the way home).  I didn't ever cry with my other kids.  Things are changing around here! Jane is in afternoon kindergarten so there is only about 2 hours from her start time to when Mark gets home.  I thought that with the kids in school that I'd have more time to work on things, but I just feel busier. Between driving Jane to school, driving Mark to and from work (assistant at the Taekwondo studio) and piano lessons, driving Paul home from work (custodial at the middle school) and taking Seth to Taekwondo, I've been putting in a lot of time in the van.  I'm so grateful that Seth and Jane got the buss lottery this year!
Perhaps next year when they are all in school for the entire day it will be a bit different?  I've enjoyed having Jane home in the mornings with me so I'm not in a rush to send her out all day!

Backpacking with the Boys

In August, right before school started for Mark and Paul, we looked at the calendar and realized that we had a day that we didn't have anything going on. Mark didn't have work, the boys didn't have taekwondo, nothing was on the schedule!   So we took advantage of this rare blank space on the calendar and we went backpacking.  We went on the same trail that I went on with my brother the month before.  It was much easier for me mentally because I knew what to anticipate, but I found it a bit harder physically.  My knees didn't handle the hike down well (I injured my knees earlier in the spring taking a Cardio Barre class) but the hike up was just tiring.  Probably didn't help that I was going uphill with two teenagers who bound up inclines like mountain goats.

Once we got up to the top we set up camp, ate dinner and then went for a walk around the lake.  It was chilly so we took off our sweaty clothes and put our coats on. Despite asking Mark if he had packed his coat 3 times, he forgot it, so he got to wear my wind breaker (he doesn't get cold easily, and he had his beard hat on, so he was ok).

Paul loved hiking up this rocky area.  It made me nervous.

The weather forecast was clear so we decided to sleep under the stars.  It was gorgeous!  There was a meteor shower, so we saw a meteor every 5  minutes or so.  We talked and looked at the stars until we drifted off to sleep.  When I woke up at night and couldn't go back to sleep it was great to just lay there and look at the stars. I could see the Milky Way. It was beautiful! Last time I was up there the moon was too bright to see very many stars!

Mark had some summer homework for AP Chemistry so I made him learn a few more elements before we could hike down.

I really had a great time going on the backpacking trip.  It was wonderful to spend time with my teenage boys.  Unfortunately, they do not love backpacking. Somehow I failed to convert them- boo! I was hoping to have built-in companions for future trips! They didn't hate it, but they aren't clamoring to go again. Rats!
